Legendary journalist Arif Nizami passes away

LAHORE—Renowned senior journalist and editor of Pakistan Today Arif Nizami passed away on Wednesday, the first day of Eid ul Adha.

Arif Nizami, born in 1948, had suffered from a heart attack around three weeks ago and was admitted to a private hospital in Lahore, his son Babar Nizami said.

Arif Nizami had also served as a former caretaker minister for information and broadcasting in 2013 and had also worked for The Nation before launching Pakistan Today.

He was the son of legendary journalist Hameed Niazi, the founder of the Nawa-i-Waqt Group, and was also the president of the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE).

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed his condolences on Twitter: "Saddened to learn of the passing of veteran journalist, editor, and political commentator Arif Nizami. My condolences and prayers go to his family."

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said he had a long relationship with Nizami. "His father and my grandfather struggled together for Pakistan," he tweeted.
